Wyoming Business Council Launches Search for Interim CEO

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Business Council (WBC) Board of Directors today announced it is seeking an experienced executive to serve as interim chief executive officer, providing steady leadership while the Board prepares for a permanent CEO search and the state enters a period of significant transition.

The interim appointment is expected to last approximately nine to 12 months. The Board is accepting applications now and will review them on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with the aim of naming an interim CEO as soon as possible.

The search follows the departure of CEO Josh Dorrell, who led the agency for seven years. It comes as Wyoming prepares for a new gubernatorial administration in January 2027 and as the Legislature considers potential changes to WBC’s statutes, programs, and governance—developments that make continuity of leadership especially important.

“The Business Council’s work doesn’t stop because we’re in a transition. We have a great team and strong partners all over Wyoming, and they’re the ones carrying this forward,” said Derek Smith, Co-Chair, WBC Board of Directors. “Our priority is steady, trusted leadership that keeps that work moving and sets up the next permanent CEO to succeed.”

The interim CEO will report to the WBC Board and work with WBC staff, the outgoing and incoming gubernatorial administrations, legislative leaders, and statewide partners. The role is designed to maintain operational stability, strengthen relationships across Wyoming, and lay decision-ready groundwork for the Board and incoming state leaders—while preserving the next Governor’s and Board’s ability to set final strategy and direction.

Key priorities for the interim CEO include sustaining day-to-day operations and staff confidence, listening to legislators and local, business, and community partners, and helping the Board shape the permanent CEO search. The Board is seeking candidates with senior-level economic development experience, a record of guiding organizations through transition, and credibility working with elected officials, business leaders, and regional and local partners. Experience across multiple states or territories is especially valued.

The position is based in Cheyenne, with flexible work arrangements possible, and requires regular travel throughout Wyoming. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and three professional references to [email protected]. Questions about the opportunity may be directed to Chava Case, Operations Director, at [email protected] or 307.777.2823.
