Diversified Agriculture Tour scheduled for June
CHEYENNE – The sixth annual Diversified Agriculture Tour sponsored by the Wyoming Business Council’s Agribusiness Division and Wyoming Women in Ag is set for Tuesday, June 24 in Niobrara County.
The tour is an annual event which showcases agricultural diversification in Wyoming and this year will spotlight the Rockin’ 7 Ranch; Gaukel Grown and Ground as well as the tilapia fish growing operations at the Wyoming Aquaculture Center in Lusk and the Waldock Partnership.
The Rockin’ 7 Ranch is nestled in the rolling hills near Shawnee and is a fourth generation ranch. Brad Reese of Rockin’ 7 Ranch will give a lunchtime presentation and share his experience in diversifying their ranch, by providing a first-class hunting experience as well as a meat processing operation they have incorporated into the ranch.
Gaukel Grown and Ground is a family-owned company in Keeline specializing in bringing all-natural, stone-ground, whole wheat products to customers through their individual mixes and gift ideas. Since starting their business in 1999 the family grinds wheat from their own fields into products like bread and pancake mix.
The Wyoming Women’s Center and the Wyoming Department of Corrections have been growing tilapia fish in Lusk since Aug. 2006. Last month the first commercial shipment of the fish left Lusk for Saber Foods in Denver. The purpose of the tilapia growing operation is to provide real world work experience to inmates, teaching them transferable job skills and work ethic to prepare them for post-release entry and employment.
The Waldock Partnership in Lusk uses tires from local mines to make recycled livestock watering tanks.
“The tour is a great opportunity to see what farmers and ranchers around the state are doing to enhance their income,” said Wyoming Business Council Agribusiness Director Cindy Garretson-Weibel.
There is a discount for those who register before June 13 and the Business Council’s Agribusiness Division has arranged for buses to bring registrants from Cheyenne and Casper to the tour in Lusk. The cost for those riding the bus to meet the tour in Lusk is $25 per person if they register before June 13. After June 13, the price jumps to $35 per person. Those participants who drive to meet the tour in Lusk will be charged $15 if they sign up before June 13 and $25 after that date.
